Dublin Moves Ahead With Formal Recognition

Ireland Recognizes Palestine as a State

Dublin Moves Ahead with Formal Recognition

Coordinated Effort with European Partners

DUBLIN, Ireland - Ireland has formally recognized Palestine as a state, in a move coordinated with at least two other European governments. The announcement was made by Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney on Wednesday, May 22, 2024.

"Ireland has taken this historic step in recognition of the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and statehood," said Coveney. "This recognition is a reflection of our long-standing support for the two-state solution and our belief that it is the only viable way to achieve lasting peace in the Middle East."

Ireland's recognition of Palestine is a significant development in the international community's engagement with the Palestinian cause. It follows similar moves by Spain and a number of other EU member states, who are also considering recognizing Palestine as a state.

The Irish government's decision to recognize Palestine has been welcomed by Palestinian officials and by human rights groups. The Palestinian Authority hailed the move as a "historic victory" and a "recognition of the Palestinian people's right to self-determination."
