Ebrahim Raisi: Iran's Hardline Cleric Takes Office as President

Background and Early Life

Ebrahim Raisi, born on December 14, 1960, in Mashhad, Iran, comes from a devoutly religious family. He rose to prominence during the Iranian Revolution and has held several high-ranking positions, including head of Iran's Judiciary from 2019 to 2021.

The Presidency

On May 19, 2024, Raisi was elected as Iran's eighth president. He succeeded Hassan Rouhani, who served for two terms. Raisi's election represents a shift towards conservative and hardline leadership in Iran. Strained Ties and Human Rights Concerns As Raisi takes office, Iran faces strained relations with the international community, particularly over its nuclear program and support for regional militant groups. Moreover, Raisi has been criticized by human rights organizations for his involvement in the execution of thousands of political prisoners during his tenure as head of the Judiciary.
